My Firstborn

I have shared all my kids with you except my oldest, so I thought I’d tell you a bit about my firstborn on his 23rd birthday. I was 20 years old when I had him, so this poor child had to endure all my mistakes as I learned to be a parent. He was such a fun child, with lots of energy and very verbal at an early age.

He has always been a consciencious child, wanting to do the right thing and wanting to please. I can remember having a particularly bad day, and he herded his brothers and sister out of the room, saying “Mom needs a break, guys!”

He is intelligent and is a talented writer. He enjoys writing music and has written several screenplays. He is a thinker and has definite opinions about what is important to him. He stands up for what he thinks is right and doesn’t let others opinions sway him.

He married his girlfriend of 4 years this past Christmas and they are extremely happy. He has met someone that completes him and loves him dearly. She is the daughter-in-law I have prayed for and I love that she loves him so well. She works full time with the Alzheimer’s Association in Fort Worth while my son completes his degree at UTA this year.

I am so proud of this child of mine, who is becoming a man of respect and integrity. He loves the Lord and I pray he will lead his family-to-come (in the distant future…hopefully not a LONG time away!) in following Jesus passionately. God has gifted him and his new bride in so many ways and I look forward to seeing how God uses them for His kingdom.

  1. Wow! It gives me great hope that the lanky boy in my house currently sleeping among his stuffed teddies and dirty socks will one day grow to be a wonderful man!

  2. That's awesome Sherrinda! Sounds like you've raises a wonderful son. Happy Birthday to him!

  3. I'm so glad you shared about your oldest! Now I feel like I can picture your family! And how cool that he is a talented writer! That must make you feel pretty good, huh? So, what is he getting his degree in? Is he going to purssue some kind of writing career? Or is he planning to moonlight like the rest of us writerly types?

  4. You are so gracious in sharing your children with us, Sherrinda! Thank you, it really is wonderful to get to know my blog friends life and their family too.

  5. Ohhhhh, I can't believe how fast this growing up thing will go. He sounds like my eldest, except for the verbal thing. My oldest is the same, conscientious, sweet, and definitely a thinker.
It sounds as though you raised a wonderful son! πŸ™‚

  6. You should be a proud mom! I can't even imagine my children as teens let alone full grown adults. It bothers me to think of not being able to cuddle up to my youngest every morning! Wow how fast time passes!

  7. Congratulations on this wonderful young man God has blessed you with.
What are your secrets to success?

  8. Awwww. What a great write-up about him. I'm sure he's touched and I can see your motherly pride in your words.

  9. What a great tribute to a wonderful son! You had me in tears of joy for you as you shared the story and pics!

    Happy Birthday to him!

  10. You have such a beautiful family Sherrinda! Your son sounds like a great young man. Congrats on their marriage and happy birthday to him!

  11. Happy Birthday to him! Thank you for sharing your family with us. I love learning about blogging friends and what's going on in their lives and what makes them who they are. Your son sounds wonderful πŸ™‚

  12. This made my heart smile.

  13. Tabitha, I hate to tell you, but there will always be dirty socks! lol But it is such a blessing to have raised a man.

Heather, we are celebrating tonight and I am cooking him what he ordered: roast, homemade bread, and blackberry cobbler.

Jody, he is wanting to get into copywriting (advertising, marketing) but he will moonlight as a screenwriter, I'm sure!

Eileen, I hesitate to share so much, but I love learning about my blogger friends, and thought yall might want to know about me. (I did leave out his name though!)

Jessica, the time just flies by. It is amazing to think back on the years and realize just how fast they have gone by. Enjoy!!

Marybeth, my kids may not cuddle like they used to, but just yesterday, I was writing on the bed, and my oldest stopped in to chat for a bit and kissed me on the cheek. He always does and it makes my heart smile!

Jeanette, my secret would have to be toughened knees from praying over my kids! lol

Stephanie, I hope I didn't embarrass him by my post!! He is a special guy to me though!

Donna, I didn't mean to move anyone to tears, but I couldn't help posting about my little boy.

Katie, thanks! I love my family. They are definitely my favorite people in the whole wide world! I am so very blessed.

Cindy, I love to learn more about my blogging friends too! It makes me feel more connected, somehow.

  14. Awww, thanks Joyce. It makes my heart smile too!

  15. Happy Birthday to your son!

I would be proud, too. He sounds like a real blessing. Thanks for sharing. πŸ™‚

  16. Seriously, you don't look old enough to have a kid that age.

As for your ms, only you know your story. Where did you plan to go with this? Category or not? If yes, cut some things to make it fit. If not, add some scenes… another twist to the plot maybe? If you read Jessica Faust's post, you'll know that too short isn't going to cut it because readers don't like to buy short books (when that's not the norm). I know when I'm shopping, I think twice about buying a book that's the same price, but seems to be smaller than the rest.

    I hope this helped…

    Lynnette Labelle

  17. Hey Sherrinda,
I saw your comment on Lynnette's blog about your book being too short for category, but it's not. Love Inspired Historical looks for a word count of 70-75k, so you're perfect. πŸ™‚ Now, I haven't seen them pub any medievals yet, but I know a bible times one is coming out in a few months. YOu might fit perfectly there. πŸ™‚

  18. Happy Birthday to your son! SOunds like you have done a wonderful job of raising him:)

  19. Happy birthday to your son.

But there is NO WAY you look old enough to have a son that age.

  20. Sherrinda, I hope you have a great time celebrating your son's birthday with him. What a lovely tribute. I think it's neat that he's a writer too. And how wonderful that God's blessed you with such a special daughter-in-love.

  21. Beautiful! I'm so happy your son has found happiness. How wonderful to hear your praise.

  22. Jennifer, thanks! I am very proud of him!

Lynnette, thanks for the encouragement about the length of my ms. I had originally thought a category length, but it kept going. πŸ™‚ So, I am going to wait and see whay my editor says ( dad!) He will probably be able to tell me what it needs or doesn't, or if I should just try again!

Jessica, thanks! I hadn't really looked into the Love Inspired Historicals because of the no medieval yet, but I suppose it would be worth checking into. I didn't know their word count was in my range. πŸ™‚

Terri, I have to give credit to God, because He gave me some easy kids to raise. I am extremely blessed!

Erica, you are Sweeeeet! I did start young and had him when I was twenty. πŸ™‚

Keli, I love that! Daughter-in-love!!! I will have to start referring to her that way! She is such a sweetheart and I am blessed to have her!

Jill, I am thankful he found joy in his new bride! They are so incredibly happy and so fun to watch. πŸ™‚

  23. Wow you're son is so handsome! I'm thrilled he found someone wonderful to share his life with. What a great mom you are, couldn't have been too many mistakes at least the scars aren't noticeable lol!

  24. Aww, so nice. Happy Birthday!

    Susan πŸ™‚

  25. T.Anne, why thank you! I think he's goodlooking, of course, I'm a bit biased! πŸ™‚

    Susan, thanks, my friend!

  26. Congratulations! It sounds like you raised him well. I hope to do so well with mine.

  27. Wow … what a neat tribute to your son. He sounds wonderful! Thanks for your kind comments on my blog! So glad you stopped by!
