Fatless Friday, Editing and Critiquing

I have good news! I lost another 2.4 pounds, giving me a total of 22.6 pounds. I am so happy with that!

Now, for the not so good news. I haven’t edited since Monday. I KNOW!!!! Isn’t that terrible? I haven’t been able to edit at lunch because there have been 2 luncheons and other things that have gotten in the way. Also, Tuesday night I had a ladies Christmas party and didn’t get home until 9:30 p.m. Last night I had choir practice and didn’t get home until 9 p.m. Tonight I went to my son’s basketball game and after cooking supper, running to the store to pick up medicines, and cleaning the kitchen, I just didn’t have the energy to edit.

So why don’t I stay up late and do it? Well, I’m tired, thank you very much. Krista, T.Anne, and Marybeth are all editing away and I am not. I think my only saving grace is that I will have 2 weeks off in one more week. Then I will get to my edits. (of course, they will have finished by then, I’m sure!) No worries….we are all winners!

Now, for the Critique News! I let Lynnette Labelle do a little matchmaking and she formed a Critique Group for romance writers. There are 5 of us and we have set up a Yahoo Group to do our critiques. Three of us have up loaded a chapter and I am looking forward to getting to read them. (I haven’t yet, due to the crazy week!)

I have gotten 2 critiques on my first chapter and I am amazed at the good feedback I’ve gotten. Yes, there are places that need work, but it was great to see what others see. I like having confirmation on things I’ve wondered about and I had some new things shown to me that I had never thought about before! I’m excited about how this will make my writing stronger.

So this has been my week. The good, the bad, and the new! How has yours been? How are you doing with your writing goals? Any successes? Any procrastination going on? 🙂

  1. A little more procrastination than I care to admit! The week has not been a wash though. I tackled a scene that was stumping me, and I'm pleased I took an angle that was out of my comfort zone. I actually like that scene a lot.

Happy to hear all the wonderful updates!

  2. Congrats on the weight loss! That's incredible!

And I have to say Dec. is a bad month to make big editing plans!! That's one of the reasons I tried to get mine done before Thanksgiving! But I'm sure once you get into your two weeks off, you'll get a ton done!

And that's wonderful about the crit. group Sherrinda! I'll look forward to hearing how that works out for you!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. You are doing so great with the weight loss! Congrats!

I opened my memoir today and played around with the first chapter. I haven't touched it in two months. I needed a break. I have no plans to make this a fast edit though. This is the third run through and I want to take my time this time.

Good luck to you with the editing. It can be tough. 🙂

Writing's going well for me! I'm nearing the 90,000 word mark on my WIP. SO excited to finish the rough draft!

  5. You can do it, YOU can do it! Go Sherrinda!

Seriously, I took several days off myself, and almost all of last weekend, so don't feel bad:-)

I think this time of year our “time” is going to come in spurts, the key is to use whatever time we DO get wisely!

I agree with Jody, December is a bad month for a edit marathon, but at the same point and time, I decided that in order to be any kind of productive at ALL this month, I needed to have a goal!

  6. I sometimes feel a wee bit guilty for delaying editing but then when I do get around to it, I see things with fresh eyes. So, maybe a break (let's call it what it is: procrastination!!!) can be good.

A sfor writers groups on Yahoo r similar: great! Feedback as you go along helps – and it can save you so much work in the long run (or rewriting just when you think you're done…)

    Good luck with it!

    Cheers, Jill

  7. Congratulations on the weight loss and the new crit group! That's awesome!

I, too, have been caught up in life happening too quickly forcing me to put aside those edits I so badly want to work on. I think I'm going to have time today and over the weekend. I sure hope so, because I'm getting a little cranky over it.

  9. That's a good week, Sherrinda! Congrats on the weight loss. And sometimes a break when editing is a good thing. I wouldn't get to down on it.

Um… I've been apartment hunting so my mind is swirly. I've had better weeks, but this one wasn't terrible–just stressful.

    Have a great weekend.

  10. I got through 20 of my 40 chapters and handed it off for a critique. Is that cheating?

  11. Wow, what a week! Congrats. 🙂 I'm glad I'm not the only one who goes to bed before ten. I'm not sure I've ever stayed up past then to edit or write. Eleven is probably the latest, but if I'm tired, I sleep. 🙂

Congrats on the group! I hope you have a wonderful time in and learn a ton. I thought you had a crit partner though…I can't remember who. Crit groups are great though because you get feedback from more than one person.
    Have an awesome weekend!

  14. Tamika, I admire anyone who gets out of their comfort zone! You're my hero!

Jody, yes, December is a terrible time to try to write, but I am hoping with the 2 weeks off, I can get something done! 🙂

Tabitha,a third run through! Wow, I know there will be alot of run throughs, but it sure discouraging to know I have to keep doing it! (I'm finding that is it not my favorite part of this journey.)

Katie, wow! You are moving along fast! Do you think it is the encouragement from getting an agent that has you so motivated and inspired?

Kristak, I think you are right. I am feeling a bit spurty! lol I love having the goal and the “competition” to motivate me! You rock, girl!

Jill, lol, your honesty cracks me up! Yes, it IS procrastination and I am queen of it!lol I am hoping the Crit Group works out for me like you mentioned.

Heather, I hope you get some free time to work on your edits this weekend.:)

Sanjeet, good for you in getting out of your comfort zone! That is awesome!!!

Kristen, ugh, apartment hunting sounds terrible! I will be house hunting at some point, I suppose, and am NOT looking forward to that! When are you moving?

Marybeth, nah….I don't think it's cheating! I'm so impressed you are halfway finished! You go, girl!

Jessica, I just can't stay up late anymore. I get up at 5am for work and am beat when I get home. Not lots of energy left. 🙂

ERica, thanks! I hope to REALLY enjoy my time off! And get ALOT accomplished!

Cindy, thanks! I am really looking forward to the crits and the edits!

  15. Hi Sherrinda –

Congrats on the weight loss! You'll get back to the edits soon.

I saw Lynnette's post about critique partners, but I'm not a romance writer. A couple of friends and my writers group help me out.

I got a devotional assignment this week, so my attention's been focused on getting that done. Also, I'm dreaming about book 3. Maybe I can't get with the editing because I'm supposed to do the first draft.

    Blessings,
    Susan 🙂

  16. Edit with me today we will suffer together! You know what? I love to edit once I'm doing it. It's near impossible to find time for edits this time of year. I'm holding my own though with one chapter a day. (wish it was more!!! I really love my book =)

  18. Wow, I'm SOOO proud of you!
My critique partners did more for my writing than the fab. book Self-Editing for Fiction Writers.

My week? Some fiddling, which will have to be trimmed from the schedule. SOON.

    Thanks for asking!

  20. Congratulations on your weight loss. We had our church's Christmas dinner tonight and I am sooo stuffed! I will have to go on a diet soon. You are doing better than I am with your editing, I think I've just about decided to take December off with my writing. I have a column to write before the end of the month and I think that's about all I'm going to get done. I'll get back to business in January.
