Regifting At Your Own Risk

I went to a party last night where you regifted something you have been given, or you brought something nice from your home to give to someone else. What was interesting was someone opened up a present that I had bought for a different party last week! Someone regifted a gift that I bought. It made me feel…weird.

At first I was kinda sad that someone didn’t like what I had bought for the party, but then I realized something. Not everyone has the same taste as me. And not everyone needs–or wants–the same things as I do. It is just a matter of taste and/or a matter of need.

It got me to thinking about books and how subjective reviews can be. I have read scathing reviews about books that I absolutely loved. And I have also read glowing reviews of books that I thought were duds. So often it is a matter of personal taste. What we like and what we don’t like.

This gives me hope that someday when I get ready to put my stuff out there, there will be somebody who will like what I write–eventually. Some won’t like it, of course, but at some point, someone might like my story and possibly give me a chance. Who knows? It’s a nice thought though.

Do you regift? Does it bother you to think that someone has regifted something you have given them?

  1. I have never heard about anything like this before. I don't really know how to feel about the concept, but no I don't think that I have ever done this before. I agree with you on the aspect that not everyone has the same taste in terms of writing. I try to be open, some genres I just don't read though. I think that at times we all wonder how our work will be embraced, but at the end of the day, I think that it will touch who it is meant to touch. :o)

  2. It's hard to keep track of who gave what so you don't regift to the giver and hurt feelings. Far easier to donate items to a charity. Though an item may no longer suit your taste or needs, the donation will help others.

  4. Sherrinda, CANNOT WAIT to read YOUR books!
Yes, I regift, but only if I truly believe the person will LOVE the gift.

  5. I haven't really had the need to regift, but I like what you said about such subjectivity! My goodness, it is EVERYWHERE! Can make you dizzy for sure. But I know I want to read your work! And I am sure I will love it. 🙂

  6. Wow! That's ironic! Did they realize they did that?

I've definitely regifted- for white elephant parties. And made sure the people who gave me the gift didn't know anyone at the white elephant party. :0)

  7. Hi ladies! Just getting online this evening after a day at work and a basketball game in a nearby city. Whew!

I think regifting is okay if you know the person who gave it to you isn't around. I think you run the risk of hurting someone's feelings otherwise. I don't know…it's a funny thing.

  8. What an embarrassing event. I didn't regift, but one year I got some Christmas CDs for my mother in law because she's always asking for different Christmas CDs. But I guess this was the wrong kind because she wrinkled her nose and made fun of it for a quite a while after opening the present. Didn't make me feel too Whoopie.

Thanks for your post. I just got a ho-hum review. I guess my hero was too good and bad guy was too bad. But you're right. Reviews are very subjective, so maybe not everyone will be so disappointed.

  9. I'm not a huge regifter. Especially with books. LOL Once I get them I become a hoarder – good or bad books. They're just … addictive. SO I will always keep your book, dear Sherrinda … 🙂

  10. I'm not a regifter. I'm sorry for how you must have felt when something you purchased was regifted. Did they know?

  12. The only think I've regifted are books, but that's usually after I've read them and loved them and want somebody else to enjoy them.

Have fun at your Christmas party tonight and enjoy your break!!
