Historical or Contemporary Fiction?

After many people told me I looked sick yesterday at church, I gave in and went to the doctor. It was what I thought. I sinus infection. No fever, but just plain miserable. So…I got a steroid shot – those sting, by the way – an antibiotic, and an icky bubble-gum flavored syrup for congestion and coughing.

Today, I am better. I thought I was achy because I laid on the couch reading, watching movies, and writing during our unheard-of-four-snow-days-in-a-row week! But no, I was really sick. I’m glad I had the snow days to rest and recover, but I’m hoping the state gives us a waiver so that we don’t have to make up that many days! Wishful thinking maybe, but I can hope.

During my time off, I started submitting my speculative contemporary romance to the big ACFW crit loop and have gotten some pretty good feedback. So… I think I’ll continue working on it and maybe enter it in a contest to see how it fares. I saw that some contests had speculative genres open. (Interesting, huh?) I am still dreaming and plotting out my regency and hope to start that one in the near future. I better get busy!

Entering both my historical and contemporary writing into the crit loop has been eye opening. I’ve gotten way more feed back – and quicker feedback –  on my contemporary, rather than my historical. I’ve really been amazed at the difference!

Do you think more people prefer contemporary over historical? What do you think?

  1. Sherrinda, I don't know what most people prefer, but I love historicals. I read some contemporaries, but my first pick is a book the transports me to the past.

  2. I think historicals sell better than contemporary, at least in the Christian market. But I'm more of a contemporary gal myself.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  3. Romance isn't the first genre I gravitate towards, but if I have to pick, it would be historical. When I read for pleasure, I like to escape. Contemporary romance is the here and now doesn't give me enough of a chance to escape back in time.

  4. I prefer historical because you can get the romance with the history of the times. Double your pleasure!!!

Glad you are on the mend!

  5. When I'm writing my contemporaries, I prefer historicals. And when I'm writing my historicals, I prefer contemporaries. 🙂

  6. I hope you feel better, Sherrinda! Four snow days, wow, that's unheard of even here in the “snow” belt of upstate NY.

I prefer historicals, as far as romance I really only read historicals. In fact to be honest, if an author gets their history wrong…forget it, even if the romance is great. I guess the past just seems more romantic. But I do like contemporary women's fiction.

  7. Oh, Sherrinda! So sorry to hear you were sick. I hope you feel better soon.

I prefer contemporaries, but enjoy historicals when I read them. From what I keep hearing, though, historicals are the big thing right now and people LOVE them.

  8. I'm a contemporary girl, but I've been reading more and more historicals. I'm so amazed by the depth of research. By book's end, I've learned something unexpected.

Have you considered entering your manuscripts in the My Book Therapy Frasier contest?

So sorry to hear you've been sick. Glad you're on the mend though!

  9. I'm a die hard historical girl however I think contempories might be “easier” to critique (if there is such a thing) because they're more current and easier to understand. If you're critting a historical and don't understand the time period it can get sketchy. on the otherhand, that's not say contemporaries are simple! Nope, I'm not saying that at all!

  10. Keli, I knew you were a historical gal! And I cannot WAIT to get my hands on yours! Squeeee!

Katie, I heard historicals were hot right now in the CBA market. I read both contemp and historical, but I tend to gravitate toward historical.

CJ, I am with you about contemps not being able to transport me elsewhere. I do find that if the contemps are funny and have great, snappy dialogue and lots of romantic tension, then I am hooked! 😉

Linda, thanks! I like historicals because you can learn something new. Makes me feel smarter! lol

Kaye, I can TOTALLY understand that! But you seem to go back and forth between yours so much that you must get whiplash! 😉 Can't wait for your new ones to come out, girl!

Julia, I am feeling sooo much better! Yay for steroids! LIke you, I gravitate toward historicals, but like a fast paced contemp.

Cindy, thank you, I am MUCH better! And I heard that too…about historicals being IT right now. Just wait though, another year or so and it will be all about the contemporaries.

Lisa, yes, I have considered the Frazier, though I don't think I'm near accomplished enough for that one! I may give it a go though and see what happens. I'm sure I can learn alot through the feedback.

Jaime, I think you may be on to something there, Jaime. I think contemps may be easier, but we don't have to “know” history to crit well. Good point!

  12. Yay for great feedback!!!! I don't know about the historical verses contemporary debate. personally I do prefer contemporary, but I have read both. Historical seems to have a lot of diehard fans.
