I don’t know about you, but when I am hungry and thirsty I am not comfortable. In fact, sometimes I can be downright cranky! And the thing is, I am really not desperate for food and water, as I have only to open my pantry or turn on my water faucet to get what I need.
We don’t like being uncomfortable, do we?
And yet, Jesus says we are blessed when we hunger and thirst for his righteousness. It’s not blessed are the content and comfortable on their spiritual journey. It’s blessed are those who are uncomfortable…desperate for more…longing for a richer relationship with Jesus…willing to sacrifice in order to gain more of Him.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. It’s a call on our lives. It is a summons to develop a hunger and thirst for more of His presence in our lives.
Even Jesus was not content where he was. At the beginning of his ministry he went to John the baptist to be baptized. John didn’t want to baptize Jesus, as Jesus should have been the one to baptize him. But Jesus said he needed to be baptized to fulfill all righteousness. He didn’t really need to be baptized for his sins, and yet he needed to take the next step in his journey. He needed to fulfill his Father’s mission and he was taking the next step.
What is our next step?
Are you content in your spiritual walk? If so, then you need to take the next step in praying for a hunger and thirst for more of Him. God says that our prayers are answered if it is in accordance with His will. What could me more in His will than loving Him more? Pray for a hunger for Him. Pray that He will give you a desire for Him. He will answer with a YES!
Then you will thirst as you ought.
And you will be filled with living water….Himself.
