The Jury Is Out

I shall be out of pocket today because I have Jury Duty. It’s my first ever that I couldn’t get out of. You see, used to I could claim having small children as an excuse, but not anymore. And I’m not thrilled about it, I assure you. I told someone they could borrow my cranky pants yesterday, but I would need them back today. I’m hoping I’m not in too much of a cranky mood though.

I don’t mind doing my civic duty, but I really dislike being with a huge crowd of people and not know what to expect. I’m nervous and I don’t want to be picked. At all. I know I should be proud to serve, but I think most of my problem is just fear of the unknown.

I really don’t think I would make a good juror. I am one of those people who can see both sides. I hear someone give their point of view and think, “Yeah, that’s right.” And then I can hear someone else’s story and think, “Oh yeah, that’s right too!” I can have opinions about certain things, but alot of times I just don’t know what to think! Isn’t that terrible?

I was told to take a book with me, so I am taking James Scott Bell’s book, Revision and Self-Editing. I am taking my highlight too.

  1. Oh Sherrinda! Bummer! I've always been able to use the excuse of young children too. But at least, if nothing else, you'll get a good day of reading in and hopefully get excited about going through your FINISHED book and starting edits!

  2. I wouldn't be very happy about it either. Good idea to take a book and highlighter. Look really uninterested–maybe that'll spare you.

  3. Well, it's kind of exciting. What if you get caught up in some sort of murdert trial, or a political brouhaha? LOL! Watch everyone girl, and take notes. Who knows what kind of interesting and bizarre things you'll see! 🙂

BUT, it was actually prety interesting. If I were you, I'd take notes on the process!!! Maybe you'll want to include something in a story someday!!

  5. I would totally switch places with you if I could. I've never been called to jury duty, and am dying to go. My luck though, I'd sit there all day and not get picked.

  6. I'm groaning for you. Does anyone like jury duty? That might be a funny story to write–the person who can't wait to be on jury duty.

  7. Oh, I just got my jury summons the other day, too, for sometime in August. Bleh.

  8. 😦 Jury Duty.

Guess you could wear a T-Shirt that says “I think he did it.”

    Or “Set her free!”

The lawyers would use a pre-emptive strike to get you off any jury panel. 🙂

  9. I hat jury duty. I've gotten out of it once and also had to spend a day a the courthouse waiting to be dismissed. Good luck. Maybe make mental notes about people you see. You might get some good character ideas by watching others.

  11. Hi Sherrinda –

I got called for Jury Duty a few months back. The hardest part for me was finding the courthouse!

Our state has a “one day or one trial” rule. The lawyers are pretty thorough when seeking a jury. I didn't get picked this time, but have in the past.

It's really quite an interesting process. Soak up the sights and sounds. You might see someone, who will be the basis of a character.

    Blessings,
    Susan

  12. Lol, I like what Erica said! So funny! My husband got picked last to be on the jury. He said it was very interesting (stuff I could use for writing). The year prior I was summoned just weeks after I had my second daughter. They gave me an extension but I still had to go in. I got called into the courtroom, got asked questions about domestic violence, gave my answers and consequently was the first to be sent home. Oh well, at least I was being honest 😀

Oh, dear. I think the book is a great idea, and look for possible characters for your next book.

I went to jury duty in downtown L.A. many years ago, but i was too outspoken and opinionated, so they kicked me off of the six panels I was chosen for! Of course I am much more demure and timid now (that was a lie).

But I got to meet a lot of street people and tell them about Jesus, so it was time well spent.

Let us know how it turns out, okay?

  14. Oh you ladies make me laugh! I love all your ideas…especially the t=shirt idea! lol Oh my stars, that would have been fun to wear into the courtroom!

Isn't it funny that some of you love jury duty and some don't? I love the different kinds of people and believe me, there were alllll sorts of people in that jury pool!

I will let you know tomorrow how it all went down.
