Issue of Timing

I watched American Idol last night and was struck by one of the comments made. I think it was Ellen who said at this point in the competition it just gets hard to narrow down  a winner. There is so much talent that all of them should make it. I don’t think they all are that good, but I agree that some are worthy to make it to the top. But the thing is…not all of them can. It takes the right people voting at the right time. It takes a good night of singing. It takes shining in front of the world when the world is ready to exert the energy to pick up the phone and vote.

Publishing a book is like that. There are many good writers out there, but it’s the one that shines the most in front of eyes that are in a good mood and are ready to exert the energy needed to push the book through to publication that rise to the top. Yes, it takes good writing to shine. Yes, it takes work to rise to the top. But there is the element of timing involved, I think.

It’s all about God’s timing. It’s the unknown variable, but it is by far the best timing. It’s not something you can corral or command. It is something you rest in and find peace in.  We can fret and worry all we want, but God is ultimately our agent. He is the one who opens doors and gives us success. He’s the one who lands the contract. All in His time.

We just get to enjoy the journey. So let it be a thrilling one, reveling in the gift He has given you with words.

  1. Oh I totally agree with you. Timing is everything. Well, not everything, but you get what I mean. I think (for me anyway) that is why in the end you can only do what you can do and then you have to leave the rest in God's hands.

  3. Beautiful thoughths, Sherrinda, and ones that I wholeheartedly agree with and need to hear every day. Enjoy the processes and work hard for God, because He is ultimately the one I hope to serve.

    Thanks, Sherrinda!!

  4. Bless you! I need this! Of course, I am always telling my husband, “It's got to be the going, not the getting there, that's good.” (a line from Harry Chapin's song, “Greyhound.”

    So I'm off!

  5. Lovely thoughts here, Sherrinda. Our timing is often not God's. As I finish yet another massive rewrite, I have to say I'm thankful the earlier version was rejected. As I develop more persistence and patience, I'm learning to lean into His wisdom about when the journey will lead to publication.

  7. I heard Joyce Meyer say last night to be aggressive about what God has laid on your heart to do. I think that may be part of enjoying the journey. With God as our agent, we should have more confidence than the next contestant!

  8. As impatient as I can be sometimes, it's really a comfort to know that God's timing is the only one that counts… he knows what's best for me, and that's that. Of course, that's easier said than truly felt in the heart on some days!

  9. Since God gave me the desire to write and has been with me every step of the way, I'm trusting Him with the aspect of publication. Doing so sure makes the waiting times easier to bear.

  10. Hi Sherrinda –

I saw AI last night and noted that comment. We're getting down to the best performers.

Timing is important. We can't see down the road, but the Lord can. Think about the Israelites waiting all those years for the Messiah. It had to be the right time on God's calendar.

    Thanks for the reminder.

    Blessings,
    Susan 🙂

  11. Oh, yes. I mean. OH, YES. You hit the bulls-eye, dear.

When my agent sends a “so sorry” email with a rejection letter attached from a publisher I say, “Not to worry; it's not God's timing yet.”

Pray I can keep this attitude! She just sent my query to another round of editors.

    Love you,
    Jen

  15. Amen! There is so much outside of our control. Sometimes I wonder if being a published writer is even what God has in store for me. It's one of those times that I wish I had a few of the answers.

  16. Woo-hoo, I love this post! You are absolutely right about that. God's timing is something that has been scary to me in the past, but I've learned to take it in stride and accept things when they happen as God's will and purpose for that moment.

  17. Amen. So true. Waiting for God's timing, I find, can be hard but as long as I keep Him in my focus, I know I am walking in the right direction, and in His time. Great post.
